1. The name of the island

The name Sardinia derives from the term Sandaliotis, which means sandal, because of its shape, which is very similar to a footprint. For the same reason, the Greeks called it Ichnusa, meaning footprint. Well, while Sandaliotis is still used today to refer to the island, in its “modern” variant, Ichnusa is now the name of a famous Sardinian beer! Have you ever tasted it? It is now exported throughout Italy. 🙂

2. The Sardinian flag

The island’s flag depicts the head of the Four Moors. According to legend, in 1096, during the Battle of Alcoraz between Peter of Aragon and the Saracens, a knight dressed in white with a red cross on his chest appeared on the battlefield. This knight managed to put the invaders to flight, disappearing into thin air and leaving the four heads of the Saracen kings on the battlefield.

Later, the king realised that the mysterious knight was St George and, to commemorate the great victory, he decided to change the island’s coat of arms. From that moment on, the flag of Sardinia has been represented on a white background, with a red cross and the four heads of the Moors.
